Rotations update: 3 down, 9 to go!

I know it's been a while since I've updated my blog, but it has taken me a bit to figure out how I feel about this whole rotation thing.  And my goal to myself is to not write, rather than write without purpose.

From previous posts, you know that I was super excited and really looking forward to what lay ahead during Husbands rotations.  Rotation #1 was a super organized and predictable office.  Their days were planned well in advance and we got into a routine rather quickly.  Then, just as soon as we (read I) got comfortable, BAM! Those 3 weeks and 3 days were over and we were on to #2.  And # 2 SUCKED!!!  Not really sucked like 'Husband had a horrible preceptor and didn't learn anything but how to say "I don't know sh*t" (yes, that is a nightmare story from other students)', but sucked in comparison to the fields of daisies and puppies that #1 had been.

Here's a thought: The thing about 3 weeks and 3 days (the average length of a rotation) is that it seems like it will be forever at the beginning, and then at the end you think "wow, that was fast."  So #2 went by fairly quickly.

Rotation #3 was ER (Dr. Ross anyone?), so we received a schedule a week or so before and saw 12 hour shifts and some overnights that Husband would be required to work.  As much as I was dreading that, it actually turned out to be not so bad for us.  The overnights fell on a weekend and I packed up the kids (still weird to use the plural version of that word) and headed to the Farm!  Quality Nana and Grandpa time was just what we needed.  And that left a quiet, empty house for Husband to come home to and s.l.e.e.p.  The 12 hour shifts sometimes ended early and we would be surprised with Husband home for dinner.

I was also able to witness Husband the MOST excited I think I've ever seen him.  During one of his Saturday evening shifts in the ER (Dr. Carter??), he was on the team that treated a gun shot wound victim.  He got to do CPR, use the 'clear' zapping machine (whatever its called...you know, the one like on ER when Dr. Green holds the little paddles and says 'CLEAR' and Nurse Carol tells everyone to 'MOVE' and then they zap the patient), tie in a chest tube, and watch them crack the guys chest open to get his heart beating.  He was so excited about all of the procedures he saw and watching how the team interacted to try to save this patient.  It was also the night we realized that one of the best days' of Husbands life was the worst day of someone elses'.  The young man did not live, and as we watched the 10 o'clock news, we saw some of the details of how that young man came to end up in the ER on that table.  Now, that stuff is REAL.  No more pictures in books or professors lecturing about what happens and what should happen.  It was a strange mix of highs and lows all in one day.

So today, rotation #3 is over and we have a 3 week vacation!  We will be taking a road trip (our first LONG one with Baby Girl) and spending some quality time together before Husband his the ground running again with Rotation #4.  Rotation #4 is confirmed as Family Medicine and it is pretty close to home.  It's also an 8 week rotation so it will take us almost the whole way through the summer.  Wow.  Time really is flying.

Quick update on Baby Girl and Little Man.  Baby Girl is 5 months old on Saturday and has rolled over all of 1 time.  And I wasn't there.  She is super laid back and attentive to all things Little Man does and says.  Pretty sure she's going to an expert on Transformers, Power Rangers and Dora.  She will be a rocking chick, no doubt.  Little Man will be in 1st grade...insert heart breaking...but is so excited about it.  Kindergarten rocked for us and we can't wait to see all the new things he will learn.  He loves Baby Girl, but is still more impressed with a blow-out diaper than her sweet coos and giggles.  Such a boy.

That's all for now.  Life continues....
